Mental health counseling services provided in conjunction with access to parenting support groups, doula services, lactation consultation (all offered through Desert Birth and Wellness) reduce the risk of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD’s) which affect about 21% of mothers and 10% of fathers.
Meeting with a therapist while pregnant or even before becoming pregnant may seem unnecessary, but if you have a history of depression (including postpartum depression), anxiety, other mental health challenges or past trauma, counseling can be a useful tool to reduce the risk of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (this includes Postpartum Depression) and prepare you for pregnancy, delivery, attachment building and parenting.
Likewise, counseling can be helpful if you are currently experiencing any of the symptoms of a Perinatal Mood or Anxiety Disorder:
Challenges falling asleep, staying asleep or sleeping too much
Changes in eating habits
Crying more than usual
Hopelessness or helplessness
Mood swings, irritability or anger
Intrusive/repetitive thoughts or thoughts about hurting your baby or yourself
Feeling overwhelmed all the time
Experiencing excessive worry about things that you never worried about before or
Having challenges building a connection with your baby
Parent Coaching is also an option for parents who need support understanding their child's development or experience uncertainty about their parenting techniques.
